Three Afghan nationals lodge complaint with the ECtHR about their detention and expulsion from Croatia in 2020

On 14 October 2026, three Afghan nationals lodged an application with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) concerning their detention, reported ill treatment and subsequent expulsion from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina in late 2020. In December 2020, the Croatian civil society organisation Centre for Peace Studies (Centar za mirovne studije) filed a criminal complaint on their behalf. In April 2023, the applicants lodged a complaint with the Croatian Constitutional Court concerning the lack of an effective investigation; this complaint reportedly remains pending.

The three Afghan nationals subsequently applied for international protection in Germany, where they were granted protection against refoulement. They are supported in their application by the CSO Centre for Peace Studies, PRO ASYL, the Dutch Council for Refugees and the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights.
