As of 12 June 2026, beneficiaries of international protection will still participate in public health insurance, but no longer as state-insured persons in the sense of a separate category, as defined in Section 7(1)(o) of the Czech Act No. 48/1997 Coll. (Act on Public Health Insurance).
For adults, if a refugee or beneficiary of subsidiary protection is not employed, self-employed or if they do not fall into the category of state insured-persons for a reason other than what is stated in Section 7(1)(o) of Act No. 48/1997 Coll., they are a person without taxable income for health insurance purposes and must pay for their health insurance themselves.
Unemployed refugees or beneficiaries of subsidiary protection can be registered with the Employment Office as job seekers during their unemployment period and, then, they are state-insured.
Minors remain in the state-insured regime if they are a dependent child within the meaning of Section 7(1)(a) of Act No. 48/1997 Coll.
The Ministry of the Interior indicated that the affected persons will be informed about the change in the health insurance regime and will be provided with information on further action.
