A new draft law aims to end the provision of legal information and assistance to foreign nationals in detention centres through CSOs and have instead the French Office for Immigration and Integration taking over the task. The role of lawyers will be increased for the legal assistance aspect.
The French Senate adopted the draft law, with amendments, at first reading on 12 May 2025 but has postponed the entry into force of this new measure until 1 January 2026 and, for Mayotte, until 1 April 2027, when the contracts between the State and the CSOs expire.
The proposed draft law still needs to be examined by the National Assembly.
