New rules have been introduced to temporarily stop a deportation instead of granting the person a residence permit while waiting for return.
With the new rules, those who have committed a crime or are considered a security threat and have received an expulsion order but remain in Sweden (e.g. he/she cannot return to his/her country of origin because she/he will be at risk of death penalty, torture, inhuman or degrading treatment), will not receive the same rights and benefits as those in need of protection.
While awaiting for deportation and following an individual assessment, the person is offered a place in one of the SMA's accommodation facilities. The person will have the obligation to report and will not be allowed to leave the area of residence.
