Slovakia and Czechia reinforce border cooperation

Slovakia and the Czech Republic have reaffirmed their cooperation on border protection and the prevention of irregular migration through a joint police exercise held on the Slovak-Czech border.

Slovak authorities reported that irregular and transit migration has significantly decreased, with only nine cases recorded in the first eight months of 2026 compared to nearly 60,000 during 2022-2023. The exercise tested preparedness for potential increases in migratory pressure and highlighted the importance of cooperation between neighbouring countries and the protection of the external Schengen border.

Slovakia also announced plans to conduct a further exercise on its eastern border later in 2026 to prepare for possible migration movements linked to developments in Ukraine.
