Italy and Denmark jointly launched a diplomatic initiative urging the European Union to call for an emergency meeting of ministers of the interior following recent developments at the EU's external border in Ceuta, underscoring growing concerns over irregular migration and border security.
In a letter addressed to European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin in his capacity as holder of the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the two countries called for an immediate and coordinated European response to the evolving situation.
The initiative has received broad political backing, with 22 European heads of state and governments signing the letter, signaling a strong consensus among participating Member States on the need for urgent action. The signatories stress that the European Union must act collectively to prevent uncontrolled irregular crossings at its external borders, dismantle migrant smuggling networks, eliminate factors that could encourage further illegal entries, and ensure an effective and unified European response.
The proposed meeting would provide an opportunity for a joint assessment of the situation in Ceuta and the development of coordinated measures aimed at strengthening the EU's external border management.
