The Citizenship Act was amended as of 17 December 2025 and provides the following changes:
- An applicant is required to have sufficient financial resources, proved by a reliable account of the source of resources during the last 2 years. If the person received unemployment benefits or social assistance for more than 3 months during the past 2 years, there are not considered to have sufficient financial resources.
- To establish the identity of an applicant, then the person must present a valid national passport (if one was issued) when applying for citizenship.
- Criminal offences will have greater impact on losing citizenship, with longer waiting periods for negative decisions.
The changes apply for applications submitted after 17 December 2025. If an application is submitted without meeting the requirements, the application may be transferred to a queue of applications that will be processed more slowly.
