12 June 2026 marked the entry into application of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. Several organisations from Bulgaria, including the Center for Legal Aid – Voice in Bulgaria, raised concerns on the new provisions, particularly on the mandatory screening and border procedures. The organisation consider that these changes constitute a novelty for Bulgaria and emphasised the lack of legal framework for the Pact implementation. Relatedly, the organisation stressed the need to have a functioning mechanism for monitoring compliance with human rights and questioned the institutional preparedness for an effective implementation of the Pact.
Similarly, a number of civil society organisations from Bulgaria and Greece expressed concerns about the changes brought by the Pact in a joint statement issued on 12 June 2026 and accessible here.
