Czechia and Slovakia undertake large-scale, joint exercise on temporary introduction of border controls

In September 2026, a large-scale, joint exercise took place on the Czech-Slovak border to test the readiness of security forces for a possible temporary introduction of border controls. The goal was to practice preparedness for a possible wave of irregular transit migration. This specific exercise tested the Czech police's readiness to perform tasks in cooperation with the Czech Army and the Czech Customs Administration in the event that the government decides to reintroduce controls at the state border with Slovakia for security reasons. The Police Corps of the Slovak Republic were involved as part of cross-border cooperation.

The exercise took place along the entire length of the state border with Slovakia, which is 251 km long and has 27 former border crossings, namely 17 road, 7 railway and 3 river crossings. Random exercises also took place in the section of the so-called green state border. Together with Slovak colleagues, the Czech police checked international trains at railway crossings. Random checks of vehicles entering Czech territory were carried out at the locations of 17 former road border crossings.
