Government prepares tighten national rules for implementation of the EU Return Regulation
The Ministry of the Interior announced a project to prepare the legislative framework for the national implementation of the EU Pact Regulation.
The draft law proposal will tighten the regulations on entry bans and detention according to national leeway. One goal is to extend the maximum duration of detention during the return phase to the maximum duration allowed under the Return Regulation and to extend the length of a fixed-term entry ban from 15 to 20 years.
The project is set for the period 3 July 2026 - 31 March 2027, with the proposal to be submitted to Parliament in the autumn session of 2026. The proposed legislative amendments will enter into force in autumn 2027, when the EU Return Regulation will fully apply.
