AMIF funded project will enhance Bulgaria’s biometric technological capacity

The State Agency for Refugees under the Council of Ministers (SAR) launched a strategic project aimed to implement a technological modernisation within the framework of the Pact implementation, particularly for the new asylum border procedure. At the launching event of the project "Delivery of vehicles, Eurodac and CABIS stations for the needs of the SAR under the Council of Ministers", the chairman Ivan Ivanov explained that the project ‘is a direct investment in the security of procedures’ and ensures ‘Bulgaria’s connection with the other 27 Member States’. 

Funded with AMIF 2021-2027 financial support, the project consists in the delivery of 16 biometric stations (LiveScan) and 16 specialised Eurodac workstations to achieve full compatibility with the national automated biometric identification system (CABIS) and EURODAC. Also, the agency will receive five cars and five vans under the project.

The implementation of the new software will ensure the full implementation of the Eurodac and the Asylum Management Migration Regulation (AMMR), enabling the comparison of fingerprints of those seeking international protection. Also, the project will enable the agency to build a comprehensive and reliable system for the registration cards of foreigners issued by the SAR under the Council of Ministers with increased levels of protection against forgery and counterfeiting. 

The implementation of the project will strengthen the agency’s capacity to implement asylum procedures and the border procedure and will contribute to the more effective functioning of the national asylum system in accordance with European requirements.  

The project will be implemented until 26 November 2027.
