ECRE publishes 2025 update to Poland’s AIDA country report

ECRE has published the 2025 update to its country report on Poland, with statistics and qualitative information on asylum procedures and temporary protection, detention of applicants, and reception conditions.

With regard to asylum procedures, the update notes that 13,232 people applied for international protection in Poland in 2025, 75% of them nationals of Ukraine and Belarus. The processing time increased from 131 days in 2024 to 202 days in 2025, when statutory time limits for processing were suspended until March 2026. The report also takes note of the buffer zone along the Belarusian border, which was expanded with the suspension of the right to apply for asylum at the border with Belarus, in force since March 2025. It notes that the measure has reportedly been applied elsewhere where applicants entered Poland from Belarus, that certain returns were conducted despite interim measures being indicated by the ECtHR, and that Frontex halted the return of Pakistani nationals in November 2025 due to a possible violation of the right to non-refoulement.

With regard to reception, in 2025 Poland repealed rules allowing for the total withdrawal of reception conditions to comply with CJEU case law, while also expanding access to healthcare for applicants born in Poland. The report notes that reception and healthcare for beneficiaries of temporary protection has been limited to vulnerable applicants since November 2025, and was further limited in March 2026. 

Provisions excluding unaccompanied minor applicants from detention were also repealed in November 2025, while the report notes that accompanied children and other vulnerable applicants, such as survivors of violence and torture, continued to be detained in a quasi-automatic manner in 2025.
