Statement by government on current situation in Ceuta

The government published the following statement on 31 July 2026 on its website regarding the situation in Ceuta:

"The Portuguese Government, in coordination with its European partners, is monitoring the situation in Ceuta with great concern.

The Spanish Government informed the Portuguese Government about the situation and has given assurance that, in close coordination and cooperation with the Moroccan authorities, to organise the return of thousands of people from the past few weeks and, in particular, from the last days.

The Portuguese Government reaffirms that the integrity of the Schengen system depends on strict border controls and a determined fight against all forms of illegal immigration.

Portugal remains in permanent contact with the governments of Spain and Morocco. In this context, the Portuguese authorities, namely the GNR and the Maritime Police, are coordinating with their Spanish counterparts."
