Government approves new integrated border management strategy for 2027-2032

The Slovak government has approved the National Strategy for European Integrated Border Management 2027-2032, aimed at strengthening border security and improving the effectiveness of return procedures for irregular migrants. The strategy focuses on upgrading surveillance systems and border crossing facilities, particularly at the Ukrainian border and international airports, while advancing the digitalisation and interoperability of systems such as EES and ETIAS.

The priorities include crisis preparedness and cooperation with Frontex and other European partners to address migration pressures, cross-border crime and hybrid threats. The strategy also seeks to strengthen return procedures through closer cooperation with countries of origin and support for both voluntary and forced returns in line with fundamental rights obligations.

Additional measures include increasing capacities to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking, investing in staff recruitment and training for border authorities, and ensuring the protection of vulnerable persons and personal data. A separate action plan will define concrete measures, timelines, responsibilities and funding arrangements, with implementation to be reviewed annually until 2033.
