UNE updated its practice description* on protection in Somalia cases, covering several types of cases, including protection, expulsion and revocation. It also addresses certain issues related to the assessment of identity.
UNE’s practice is that the general security situation in Somalia does not, in itself, entitle an applicant to protection. The security situation in northern Somalia has remained stable over time, while in southern and central Somalia it varies both over time and between areas. The need for protection is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
The risk of circumcision (female genital mutilation), forced marriage or forced recruitment by al-Shabaab are among the circumstances that may entitle a person to protection following an individual assessment. The practice description also discusses the importance of clan affiliation and networks upon return, as well as the possibility of internal displacement.
