The Cabinet of Ministers decided to further extend the VILKATIS operation to combat irregular migration at the eastern border with Belarus until 31 December 2026.
The operation strengthens border security through increased State Border Guard capacity, including expanded drone use, and support from the State Police and National Armed Forces. Since its launch in August 2026, over 1,400 attempted illegal crossings have been prevented during the operation, while more than 11,000 people have been prevented from crossing the Latvian border illegally in 2026 overall.
