The Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Frontex antenna office in Italy was signed on 4 September 2026 at the offices of the Department of Public Security in the Viminale building. The document was signed by the Italian Police Chief Vittorio Pisani and the Frontex Executive Director Hans Lejtens.
The agreement foresees the creation of an antenna office at Rome-Fiumicino airport. The office will have a logistical and organisational function to facilitate the coordination of operational activities conducted in Italy and Malta, including in the repatriation sector, under the aegis of Frontex. The structure will also ensure effective management of human and technical resources, providing support for training and capacity-building of the Agency's Standing Corps staff and national authorities.
The office will host the Command of the Fourth Contingent of the Frontex Standing Corps, a staff of 20 dedicated to coordinating operations, intelligence gathering, logistics and administration.
Thanks to its physical proximity to Italian and Maltese authorities on the ground, the new facility will serve as a hub for operations aimed at countering irregular migration flows in the central Mediterranean and repatriation, fostering greater effectiveness and faster decision-making.
