On 28 August 2026, the Czech Minister of the Interior met with the Federal Minister of the Interior of Austria at the Mikulov-Drasenhofen Police Cooperation Centre in Drasenhofen, Austria. They discussed police cooperation at common borders, irregular migration and the fight against smuggling.
The Mikulov-Drasenhofen Joint Police Cooperation Centre has been operating continuously since 2006. Over these two decades, it has become a stable point of contact for Czech and Austrian police officers and an important part of cross-border cooperation in ensuring security, fighting crime and irregular migration. The centre also plays an important role in coordinating joint patrols of Czech and Austrian police officers. These were resumed in April 2026 after the reintroduction of Austrian border controls. By the end of July 2026, 27 joint patrols had been carried out, and a further expansion of joint police and customs control actions is expected from the autumn.
Irregular migration and smuggling are areas where cooperation between the two countries is essential. The two countries continuously monitor the current development of migration routes and coordinate joint measures. Emphasis is placed on the rapid exchange of information and joint action against smuggling and other forms of organised crime. The ministers agreed that the recent events in Ceuta have reaffirmed the need for further reforms in the field of migration policy so that the EU can resolutely confront similar mass arrivals.
