Minister calls for rapid changes in protecting EU's external borders as EU interior ministers discuss situation in Ceuta

An extraordinary videoconference meeting of Ministers of the Interior of EU Member States convened on 4 August 2026 in response to the migration situation in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. The main topic was the current development, measures taken and further steps in protecting the EU's external borders.

During the meeting, the Czech Minister of the Interior stated that current European instruments are not fit for situations involving a sudden and massive influx of migrants. He stressed the need to find new solutions that would enable Member States to react more quickly and effectively in similar crisis situations. The Czech Minister highlighted that it is necessary to strengthen prevention outside of the EU, including through return centres in third countries. He also stressed the need to continuously evaluate the development of the situation in Ceuta and potential migration routes. At the same time, he expressed his expectation that the rapid return of the remaining persons still in Ceuta will be ensured.
