During this phase, persons who may be resettled undergo a mandatory health assessment. Its aim is to:

  • detect medical conditions which may affect public health and public safety, other medical conditions that require follow-up after arrival,
  • transmit medical information in a timely manner to the receiving party to enable proper preparations for reception and continuity of care,
  • determine fitness to travel and identify travel requirements, and
  • initiate the follow-up and treatment, including predeparture stabilisation treatment, if necessary.

This health assessment is performed by IOM. Main tests include:

  • TB screening consisting of chest X-rays,
  • Tests and examinations for HIV and hepatitis B and C and syphilis,
  • Pre-embarkation checks to establish the person is fit to fly,
  • Procedures to detect mental health conditions.

As a way to monitor their activities, when partner organisations receive written questions about Croatia, they forward them to the Ministry of the Interior, so they monitor the type of information refugees are looking for.
