The Ministry of Justice and Public Security stated that correctional services are better placed than the police to operate the immigration detention centre. The ministry has therefore proposed amendments to the Immigration Act to facilitate the transfer of its operations from the police to the correctional services.
The government is developing a long-term plan for the police to ensure, among other things, that police resources and attention are focused where they have the greatest impact on their core mission. This includes considering whether certain tasks can be performed equally well or better by other actors. Transferring the operation of the immigration detention centre to the correctional services is intended to allow the police to focus more closely on their core tasks.
The operation of the immigration detention centre at Trandum and the family unit at Haraldvangen is planned to be transferred from the police to the correctional services as of 1 January 2027.
